The past few weeks have taught me a lot about inspiration vs replication. I have researched and studied the works of many different artists; gaining valuable insights on various techniques. About 2 weeks ago, I came across the work of an artist that literally blew me away. She seemed to have encapsulated all of the pen & ink, graphics, and color pieces that I have been trying to work out. So, with this ‘inspiration’, I pressed forward. I was able to create a different style of work by utilizing some of her techniques. The end result was nice, but it was not completely satisfying. However, yesterday I realized what I had been trying to bring forth and the ideas began to flow again.
It is true that inspiration is good for any creative individual. But, it is very important to make sure that the inspiration does not lead to a replication of another’s work. I was amazed when I stepped back and realized that what satisfied me is what I have been drawn to all along; pattern and bold color. So, as I move forward, I will continue to keep in mind the importance of inspiration and not replication.
FYI: The title for the next show is ‘Invisible’

I have been trying to hone in on a style for my pen and ink with color pieces. Here is a sketch that I worked on today. I like how it turned out and I am looking forward to applying this technique to pieces for my upcoming show. [medium used: pen&ink with colored pencil]
