Practice Makes Perfect - Part 2

Published by TWOGIL... at 9:37 am under , ,

Thought I would show you an example of how practice really does help one to perfect their skills. Look at the shading techniques used on the first image, the second image, and then the final third image. As I continue to draw more, the shading becomes more smooth. Let me know what you think.

Step 1 - shading:
Sketch Baby - 1

Step 2 - shading:
Sketch Richard - 2

Step 3 - shading:
Sketch Shading - 3

:D Smoother lines make for a better sketch ;)

I’ve always been a fan of soft lead, those claylike erasers that pick up the lead without damaging the paper, and what we called “scumpies” - rolled-up paper pencils used to smudge the shading into smooth tones. I’ll dig one up if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Thanks Dave. We had those in art class too, but I cannot remember the name that we gave them. I really appreciate the advice.
